By June 15 gasoline-powered augers will have drilled 100 holes in the corn, cotton and peanut fields of the Lower Flint River Basin in southwest Georgia. Into the holes, scientists from the University of Georgia (U.G.A.) will slip half-meter-long PVC pipes filled with sensors for soil moisture and temperature topped with a flexible antenna that can be run over by a tractor and spring back into place. Over the course of the next two years, these sensors will continuously relay soil conditions from 20, 40 and 60 centimeters deep to a computer. Combined with more accurate weather forecasts, the data will help farmers decide where and when to use their irrigation systems.
"The biggest problem we've got with irrigation is we just don't know?we use old wives' tales to decide when to irrigate," says farmer Marty Tabb, who will host the probes in a field at his 1,050-hectare Bushwater Farm near Colquitt, Ga., to help him irrigate corn, cotton and peanut crops. In addition to saving water (agriculture is responsible for 70 percent of human water use globally), the technology can also help produce more crop per drop. "Using the simplest soil monitor and a computer program, my peanut yields jumped 20 percent," Tabb reports. "I know, just from that, that if we learn how to water corn, cotton, wheat, we can save water because we tend to overwater."
Overwatering is a major problem in the Lower Flint River Basin, which lies in a region that has been gripped by drought so severe in recent years that it prompted the former governor of Georgia to pray for rain. The region produces the most peanuts and pecans in the nation, as well as vast quantities of cotton and sweet corn. And the Lower Flint River Basin is the major recharge zone for the Floridan Aquifer that supplies water to Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Georgia, as well as the home of several endangered freshwater species, such as the flatwoods salamander and the oval pigtoe mussel.
Farmers in the Flint River Basin have a direct impact on this groundwater resource, because waters on the surface and belowground are directly linked: a hurricane's downpour in the area can replenish the aquifer, whereas too much pumping of underground water to irrigate fields can literally suck the water out of surface rivers and streams. "Because of the drought and because of us irrigating, we have pulled water down, and the springs along Spring Creek don't pump anymore," Tabb says of the Flint River tributary in his backyard. "You couldn't have told me that creek would ever dry, but I drove my motorcycle two miles down Spring Creek because it was so dry."
In a bid to cut down on that water use?while maintaining the more than $2 billion worth of corn, cotton, peanut and other crop production in the region?the Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, along with U.G.A. and the University of Florida, teamed with more than 1,000 local farmers starting in 2000. The partnership started by switching some irrigation systems from high pressure mists to a low pressure system that more directly mimicked rain, saving water and energy. When applying at high pressure "you lose water to wind drift and also evaporation," explains David Reckford, director of this Flint River Basin Partnership for the Conservancy. The switch to a low pressure system alone can reduce water use by more than 22 percent.
For the first time, several top cancer organizations are recommending that smokers and former smokers ages 55 to 74 years who have smoked at least one pack of cigarettes a day for at least 30 years get an annual low-dose CT (LDCT) ? a three dimensional X-ray ? to look for lung cancer.
The recommendations, put forth as a collaborative effort by the American Cancer Society, American College of Chest Physicians, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and National Comprehensive Cancer Network, were released this morning. They appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Each year, more Americans die from lung cancer than from breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. It has held its position for years as the second most common cancer for both sexes in the United States. Only prostate cancer is more common than lung cancer in men. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women.
If detected early enough, lung cancer can be treated and survival chances improved. Despite this, until now there had been no formal recommendations on screening tests for this deadly cancer.
?We now have an important and critical tool to screen for the most common cancer in America, and can reduce the mortality through this screening,? says Dr. John Deeken, assistant?professor in the division of hematology/oncology at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Still, the question of whether every person at high risk for lung cancer should get an annual low-dose CT scan is not so simple. Since the type of CT scan used exposes the patient to radiation, albeit a low-level dose, there is a small health risk posed by this screening.
If doctors detect a questionable cancerous mass through a CT scan, they may have evaluate it further through a minor surgery called a biopsy. In this procedure, a doctor will take a sample of the tissue for further testing to determine if the mass really is a cancer. While some of these may be cancerous, there are always a certain number which are not ? meaning that the detection and subsequent surgery may not have been technically necessary.
The new recommendation also begs the question of who will be paying for the test itself.
?The cost of LDCT is currently not covered as a standard test,? says Dr. Chao Huang, lung cancer specialist at the University of Kansas Cancer Center. ?Therefore, it is difficult to recommend this test when patients may be burdened by the cost of this test year after year.?
?The key question is when will more insurance companies, and most importantly Medicare, start paying for these screening tests,? Deeken says.
And then there is the issue of how many Americans will fall under the guidelines ? and whether the resources exist to screen all of them.
?We currently do not have the infrastructure to manage the potential number of patients that would qualify for screening,? Huang says.
These issues aside, one thing is clear: screening CTs have been shown to save lives. Dr. Keith Mortman, associate professor of clinical surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine, explains that a major study in 2010 called the National Lung Screening Trial found a 20 percent reduction in lung cancer deaths in patients who were screened with low-dose CT scans as compared to those who got chest X-rays.
Dr. Herbert Kressel, a radiologist at Harvard Medical School, says that in light of this, the recommendation is a step in the right direction.
?Lung cancer is an important health problem with a poor prognosis when it is discovered at an advanced stage,? Kressel says. ?This study is important in further highlighting the importance of low dose CT screening for patients at high risk for lung cancer.?

Seattle BioMed, University of Copenhagen and University of Edinburgh report findings that could lead to new interventions
SEATTLE, May 21, 2012 Researchers from Seattle Biomedical Research Institute (Seattle BioMed), the University of Copenhagen and the University of Edinburgh have uncovered new knowledge related to host-parasite interaction in severe malaria, concerning how malaria parasites are able to bind to cells in the brain and cause cerebral malaria the most lethal form of the disease. Three related papers will be published in the May 21 online edition of PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), a premier scientific journal, highlighting this research.
"Identifying the molecules that allow malaria parasites to 'stick' to the brain takes us one step closer to new treatments," said Joseph Smith, Ph.D., leader of the Seattle team.
Red blood cells infected with the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, the type most lethal to humans, bind to receptors on cells lining blood vessel walls, which helps the parasite avoid being detected and killed by the spleen. The binding is mediated by one of several members of a family of parasite proteins called P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1, or PfEMP1. A single PfEMP1 mediates placental malaria the cause of malaria during pregnancy, which kills thousands of women and causes premature births and low-birth weight babies each year but other PfEMP1 types causing life-threatening disease in young children are unknown.
To hone in on specific PfEMP1 types associated with severe malaria, Thomas Lavstsen, Ph.D., and his team from the University of Denmark used molecular techniques to compare the levels of different PfEMP1 transcripts in blood samples from children hospitalized in the pediatric ward of the Korogwe District Hospital in Tanzania. "Our research revealed that genes encoding two distinct types of PfEMP1 - named domain cassettes 8 and 13 - were tied to cases of severe malaria, suggesting that those proteins might be suitable targets in efforts aimed at curbing the disease," explained Lavstsen. Co-author Louise Turner, Ph.D. adds "Another important aspect of our study is that we show these PfEMP1 domain cassettes are recognized by natural acquired immunity in young African children, which gives us hope that we can base a vaccine on the discovered PfEMP1 types."
In a related paper in this issue, Antoine Claessens, Ph.D., who works in the lab of Alexandra Rowe, D. Phil., of the University of Edinburgh, reports that these particular PfEMP1 types domain cassettes 8 and 13 mediate the binding of infected red blood cells to cells that line blood vessels in the brain. "This provides us with new molecules that could be targeted to develop drugs to treat the most deadly forms of malaria," said Rowe. "In addition, because animal models for cerebral malaria are currently unavailable, we believe our findings might lead to a laboratory tool for testing drugs and vaccines that block the binding of the parasite to blood vessels in the brain."
Marion Avril, Ph.D., who works in the Smith lab at Seattle BioMed, reports in this issue that domain cassette 8 encodes binding activity for brain blood vessel cells. Additionally, the authors uncovered a potential explanation for the evolutionary persistence of parasite protein variants that mediate cerebral malaria, an often-fatal disease that tends to wipe out the parasite's host.
"Because those brain-binding variants can also bind to blood vessels in the skin, heart, and lung, the parasite might sequester in those organs," Smith explained. "Together, the findings could help researchers better address the lingering problem of childhood malaria."
"It's been a 15-year journey since this gene family was discovered, but the coming together of these three studies, which all identify the same key players in severe malaria, is an important milestone," said Rowe. "We're excited to have this knowledge and begin to apply it to developing new solutions for malaria."

Co-author Louise Turner, Ph.D. adds "Another important aspect of our study is that we show these PfEMP1 domain cassettes are recognized by natural acquired immunity in young African children, which gives us hope that we can base a vaccine on the discovered PfEMP1 types."
In a related paper in this issue, Antoine Claessens, Ph.D., who works in the lab of Alexandra Rowe, D. Phil., of the University of Edinburgh, reports that these particular PfEMP1 types domain cassettes 8 and 13 mediate the binding of infected red blood cells to cells that line blood vessels in the brain. "This provides us with new molecules that could be targeted to develop drugs to treat the most deadly forms of malaria," said Rowe. "In addition, because animal models for cerebral malaria are currently unavailable, we believe our findings might lead to a laboratory tool for testing drugs and vaccines that block the binding of the parasite to blood vessels in the brain."
Marion Avril, Ph.D., who works in the Smith lab at Seattle BioMed, reports in this issue that domain cassette 8 encodes binding activity for brain blood vessel cells. Additionally, the authors uncovered a potential explanation for the evolutionary persistence of parasite protein variants that mediate cerebral malaria, an often-fatal disease that tends to wipe out the parasite's host.
"Because those brain-binding variants can also bind to blood vessels in the skin, heart, and lung, the parasite might sequester in those organs," Smith explained. "Together, the findings could help researchers better address the lingering problem of childhood malaria."
"It's been a 15-year journey since this gene family was discovered, but the coming together of these three studies, which all identify the same key players in severe malaria, is an important milestone," said Rowe. "We're excited to have this knowledge and begin to apply it to developing new solutions for malaria."

This may result in the homeowner paying more money in the long run because they are stretching their debt over a longer pay period but it might be necessary in times of need. Contending that it would be 'destroyed anyway' because there is no money for preservation work, the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum is burning a piece of its contemporary art collection every day.

Is a ?Fahrenheit 451?-style fire the solution for Italy?s increasingly debt-ridden museums??
Perhaps not, but it?s certainly a powerful wakeup call to a government and populace busier worrying about the euro crisis and unemployment statistics.
So says Antonio Manfredi, the director of the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum (CAM), which is located in a small town near Naples, Italy. A little less than a month ago, Mr. Manfredi started to burn the gallery?s collection piece by piece, saying that he didn't have the funds for upkeep. ?Our artworks will end up being destroyed anyway, since institutions are not sustaining us,? he told?Italian daily Corriere della Sera before starting the protest.?
The first to go?was ?Promenade,? a canvas by French artist Severine Bourguignon, who approved of the protest and followed it on Skype. ?I hope that this action will help the Italian government reconsider CAM's situation,? she wrote?in The Guardian. ?Without funds, CAM will be closed and its collection will effectively cease to exist.?
Bourguignon?s piece was followed by many others, as meticulously recorded on CAM?s Facebook page.
Some contended?that the protest is only the provocative performance of an attention-seeking artist ? Manfredi is himself a painter, sculptor, and photographer?? and that because CAM is not technically a public museum, the government doesn't have to support it (although most private museums also receive some funding from the Ministry of Culture).?
But there is no doubt that Italy?s culture sector has been hit hard by cuts because of the economic crisis.?The Italian daily Republica reported?that between 2010 and 2011 the Ministry of Culture?s funding saw a 14.5 percent decrease, dropping from 1.7 million ($2.2 million) to 1.5 million euros.
Despite its world-class cultural wealth, Italy invests in the culture sector less than other countries. According to a government report, in 2010 the Ministry of Culture received only 0.21 percent of the country?s budget (compared, for instance, to 1 percent in France). It?s no surprise then that several prestigious institutions are going through a rough time.?
MAXXI, Rome?s contemporary museum, which opened only two years ago, has predicted losses of 11 million euros for 2012 through 2014. Naples?s and Parlermo?s contemporary art museums are also in deep financial trouble.
In the meantime, some organizations representing workers in the culture sector are protesting against low wages and the lack of adequate benefits. In a letter recently published in Corriere della Sera, they stressed the importance of what they do, which they say goes well beyond the workplace. ?We produce intangible but necessary goods on a daily basis: intelligence, relations, social welfare,? they wrote.
Investing in culture is also the recipe called for by renowned writer Dacia Maraini, who in a recent trip to the United States was surprised by the interest Americans still have in Italian culture and history. ?Shouldn?t we focus obstinately on what we can do best instead of competing with China in producing cheap jeans?? Maraini recently wrote in Corriere della Sera.

It's nice to see this pair getting along. As for Lambert and Chris Brown? We probably shouldn't hold our breath for a similar type of detente.
